Fly Magazine says:  "In general,
when an artist uses phrases like
'humanist themes' and 'empowerment'
and 'music as a force for change' in
an interview, he either doesn't
realize that Obama already won the
election, or he's a pretentious
bastard.  But there's something
about the way that Harrisburg
singer-songwriter Koji slips them
into his sentences that makes him
seem utterly, urgently sincere, like
he's been spoon-fed nuggets from the
Humanist Manifesto since birth.
Which, figuratively speaking, he
was."
    Yeah, this dude is intense.
They say he's fiercely devoted to
his craft. Everything about his
music is art, from his lemonade
stand where he sells merch, to his
on-stage setup (lights, ladders, and
beautiful artistic backdrops have
been known to be part of the act),
and his thoughtful and colorful
songwriting.  He's been seen touring
as part f El Toro (Undecided/-
Victory), and also done a ton of
recording work with the new Epitaph
signing Settle. His new EP, recorded
with Gabe Liberti at Seaside Lounge
Sudios, Brooklyn, NY, was released
earlier this month.

News & Gimmicks
Huh?  Jason Mraz at Indie?
Yep, it is true.  We escaped reality and rubbed
shoulders with the superstar Jason Mraz and a
handful of his crew Sunday May 3 at 1:30 p.m.,
just following a fantastic waffle rush.  We were
the lucky location chosen to host a secret show
for 40 of his closest fans, hand-picked by Z104
and Triple M.

Word was, Jason wanted to do an intimate,
unplugged show at a local coffee shop, similar to
the cafes in San Diego that helped him get his
start.  We were picked, and his management
company and Atlantic Records worked with us to
make it happen...and keep it secret until Sunday
(very dificult to do, but we did it).

By 1:15 Sunday, we were packed with giddy fans,
and when Jason walked in a few minutes later, the
room was up-for-grabs.  When things settled down,
he began to just chat with everyone, tell jokes,
poke fun with his percus- sionist (who also
harmonized with him).  We expected a puffed-up
rock star, but as it turned out, he was very
down- to-earth.  He told an adorable little tale
about seeing 10 turtles down by the Alliant
Energy Center while his crew was setting up that
morning.  "Real turtles, like with shells," he
said.  "Madison is full of nature."  But then he
added, "And also beer cans." (Embarrassingly, we
later found a crushed one outside our build-
ing...a Keystone Lite, no less.)

He played a good hour and his voice filled up the
whole shop just as powerfully as any instrument.
In short, people had a great time.  After, people
hung around and shot the bull.

And there you have it.  Our little fairy tale.

Our Patio/Terrace/Zen Garden Is Open!
Ah, Spring. Enjoy the beautiful weather out on
our private patio behind our building.  It's
quiet and peaceful...great for relaxing and/or
enjoying an afternoon beer.  A very well-kept
secret.  Order inside as usual, and we'll deliver
your food and drink out to you.

Indie and the Union:  A Great Union!
Yes, the walls of Union South are tumbling down,
but in the rubble you'll see, um, Indie Coffee?
Well, sort of.  While the building gets reborn,
Indie will be hosting shows in lieu of the now
missing venue.  We are at the disposal of the
scruffy but talented WUD entertainment committee
to offer our venue for performances that are
suitable for our intimate setting.  We'll keep
you posted, OK?

Waffle-icious!
Try our Red + White waffle, which is our
delicious buttermilk waffle topped with homemade
whipped cream and strawberries. Or else, our
chocolate chocolate chip waffle, the chocolate
lover's dream-come-true. We can also bake-in some
walnuts to any of our original waffles. We call
them grass-hoppers, of course, since they add
that extra crunch. Don't forget Waffle Wednesday,
when all waffles are $1 off!

Free Flavor Friday
We've been doing this for years, but not everyone
has heard:  flavors are free on Friday!
(Fine print:  premium drinks only, excluding
Ghirardelli.)

Bring 'em Some Coffee
You can "rent" an airpot filled with our rich
coffee for just $10.95. This is enough to serve
10 people, and the price includes cups, cream,
sugar, etc.  Call 10 minutes before you need it,
and we'll get it started for you!

Indie on "Buzzed into Madison"

From The Onion's
Madison Decider 2008:
Indie Coffee looks like just another coffee shop from
the outside, but inside, the café houses a music
venue, a waffle house, a sandwich shop, and an art
gallery all at once. Indie Coffee is known especially
for its waffles, including the classic Belgian in your
choice of buttermilk, chocolate, or multigrain; the
grasshopper waffle, with walnuts baked in; and “The
Works” waffle, studded with walnuts and chocolate
chips, then topped with strawberries and whipped
cream. These sugar-rush concoctions are available
all day.  Indie Coffee [also] breaks out the bagels
and focaccia to build some of the most original sand-
wiches in town. Sink your teeth into the honey, fig,
and goat cheese with spinach on cinnamon-raisin
bread, or the turkey-walnut wrap with spinach,
tomato, and gorgonzola. Call ahead and they’ll have
breakfast or lunch hot and ready for you when you
arrive.
Good for: “Indie” overtones and a menu that
transcends the mainstream."

From The Wisconsin State Journal
(April 30, 2009):
A waffle wonderland at Indie Coffee
Generally thought of as a breakfast food, waffles do
triple duty at Indie Coffee on Regent Street. The
comforting treat can be eaten for breakfast, dripping
with butter and drenched with syrup; for lunch or for
dessert, with chocolate chips and whipped cream.
Pretty much everything on Indie Coffee's menu is
$7.70-friendly, including more conventional lunch
fare like sand-wiches. Still, it's the available-all-day
waffles that lured us in. Indie's recipe yields tender,
nutty-tasting waffles and perfectly complements a
piping hot cup of joe.
We opted for the "Red and White" waffle ($5.45), a
classic malted Belgian waffle that served as the fluffy
base for strawberries and dollops of homemade
whipped cream. The crisp, honey-combed surface
perfectly held pockets of syrup, and a dusting of
powdered sugar added a touch of class.
The freshly brewed Indie house coffee ($1.65) with
its rich chocolate and toffee undertones elevated the
meal. Latte fans will swoon for creamy concoctions
such as the grasshopper (mint and vanilla) and
bumble rumble (honey and cinnamon).
The humble spot exudes a laid-back, mellow
atmosphere with indie rock music playing in the
background. Posters from local shows and studios
give an eclectic feel to the décor, complete with
silver-backed chairs and red-shaded lamps.

Here's what others are saying:

"In addition to Indie's great coffee, food and friendly
service, it's also a forum to support independent
music and film… Indie has a reputation among artists
for its relaxed atmosphere and intimate setting."
Madison Magazine, December 2007

“Of all the coffee shops I've been to in Madison,
there's something I just like about Indie Coffee, on
Regent Street. …It's not pretentious, it's not cookie-
cutter, and it doesn't wear its quirks on its sleeve.
Service is friendly and the place is clean, too.”
Isthmus Daily Page, September 2007

"For the best cup of coffee in Madison, head over to
Indie Coffee on Regent Street and say hi to JJ and
Barrett. Get yourself a waffle and a cup of coffee and
mooch off their wireless internet….In fact, they also
have live shows by national acts there from time to
time, and they're usually free."
POST, June 2007

“If you brew it, they will come. So it seems at Indie
Coffee, 1225 Regent Street, which has attracted a
string of national acts since its opening in 2004…
[Indie] has had an impressive list of, appropriately
enough, indie bands
come through."”
Isthmus Daily Page, June 2007

"If you've never been to Indie Coffee, perhaps you
are unaware that they have free wireless and serve
[yum]WAFFLES [yum] all day, every day….Waffles
for dinner and Chad Vader, does it get any better
than that?"

Dane 101, February 2007

"I admire Indie's eclectic evening programs of film,
video, music and occasional reading events."
Isthmus Daily Page

“The most arresting menu item is probably the
honey, fig and goat cheese sandwich ($6) with the
aforementioned ingredients and spinach on grilled
cinnamon raisin bread. If you love goat cheese, this
savory-and-sweet treat should end up lodged
permanently in your memory....And don't forget
those waffles -- they’re not just for breakfast any
more… My preferred flavor, the chocolate waffle,
arrives crisp and never fails to please in its simplicity.”
Isthmus Daily Page, September 2007
